Finally, a watercolor piece! I like the way the colors turned out, but I kind of regret adding inks and gels to it.
This is based loosley off of the part of "Genji Monogatari" (The Tale of Genji), where Genji's spurned lover Lady Rokujo becomes so jealous and enraged of Genji's proper wife, Aoi, that her anger manifests itself as a malevolent spirit. That spirit then proceeds to possess the pregnant Aoi, and after priests expell Rokujo from her body, Aoi dies in childbirth. The brightly-colored face at the bottom of the painting is the adult Yuugiri, Aoi's son.
I have a few more Rokujo/Aoi-inspired paintings still in the works, so keep watching!
Wow! The textures are gorgeous, and I love the colours too. The expression on Lady Rokujo's face is so good - creepy! The leaves in the background behind Lady Aoi - are those aoi? Very clever. I love it!
