Artist's Comments

Yay, another fanart of a completley random semi-obscure foreign film! XD And one I haven't seen yet, to boot!

This piece is inspired by the two main characters from the new Japanese musical (!) film, Operetta Tanuki Goten, a.k.a. Princess Raccoon. All I know for certain is that it's about a tanuki princess (Tanukihime) who falls in love with an exiled human prince (Amechiyo, played by Joe Odagiri)), causing a lot of mush and ecclectically-styled musical numbers to ensue. The art style, from what I've seen, is FABULOUS, and the music rocks, too.

One of the coolest tidbits about the film is that Tanukihime, is played by Zhang Ziyi, and her character sings and speaks in Chinese while everyone else speaks/sings in Japanese (but they can understand her and vice-versa). Hooray for bilingual musicals! XD

The kanji character at the top means "tanuki", BTW. And that thing at the side is Tanukihime's tail. ;)

The official website is here: [link] :)

I had quite a bit of trouble with Tanukihime's face while painting it in. The original coloring was only a bit paler pink than Amechiyo's face, but the black of her hair bled onto the skin tone. I decided to make her uber-pale, which sort of makes her seem more supernatural (kind of appropriate, since she is an animal spirit and all). I keep thinking she looks sort of vampiric, rather than a regal lady with a very powered face. Oh, well, can't win 'em all, I s'pose. ^^;

hmm, that's strange! It looks like you used rubber cement to keep color from absorbing in the places where the shapes are. I figured you just didn't say you'd used it in your intro because it isn't usually named. :)

How large was the paper you used?

^^

Oh, I understand now. XD Actually, I just painted very steadily and carefully, although I did make some mistakes along the way. For the shapes in Amechiyo's clothing, all I did was paint wet-on-dry, waiting for each shape to dry before painting again. That way, it doesn't bleed.

The paper was just a bit bigger than regular-sized printer paper, I think. I cropped lot of the unused white edges off when I taped it to my painting board, though.

Dafnitly a little bit of Mack influance.

Your work is amazing...gorgeous detail and rich colours, and a very original style! :D :kowtow: She's got gorgeous hair...and this really reminds me of Gustav Klimt's stuff. A lot. And he rocks too. :D

And in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.

*shrug* I think she looks regal. With her beautiful robe she just looks like one of the actors in a japanese play or at a festival or something. They normally paint their faces white so yeah... really gorgeous... :D
