Yay, another fanart of a completley random semi-obscure foreign film! XD And one I haven't seen yet, to boot!
This piece is inspired by the two main characters from the new Japanese musical (!) film, Operetta Tanuki Goten, a.k.a. Princess Raccoon. All I know for certain is that it's about a tanuki princess (Tanukihime) who falls in love with an exiled human prince (Amechiyo, played by Joe Odagiri)), causing a lot of mush and ecclectically-styled musical numbers to ensue. The art style, from what I've seen, is FABULOUS, and the music rocks, too. One of the coolest tidbits about the film is that Tanukihime, is played by Zhang Ziyi, and her character sings and speaks in Chinese while everyone else speaks/sings in Japanese (but they can understand her and vice-versa). Hooray for bilingual musicals! XD The kanji character at the top means "tanuki", BTW. And that thing at the side is Tanukihime's tail. The official website is here: [link] I had quite a bit of trouble with Tanukihime's face while painting it in. The original coloring was only a bit paler pink than Amechiyo's face, but the black of her hair bled onto the skin tone. I decided to make her uber-pale, which sort of makes her seem more supernatural (kind of appropriate, since she is an animal spirit and all). I keep thinking she looks sort of vampiric, rather than a regal lady with a very powered face. Oh, well, can't win 'em all, I s'pose. Pencil, watercolor, pen, gel pen, gold paint pen, color pencil. Im so going to :+fave: it.
P.S.
Thank's to youre deviation I want to see that movie!
All of you work is just amazing to me. All the different mediums that you blend together so effortlessly.
I've been in awe of you work since the first time I saw it. I just love it so much, and this is exactly where I'd like to be in my artwork as well. But I don't have the talent or the patience to do something so wonderfully detailed.
You are very quickly becoming one of my favourites here.

First of all: The pattern on his clothes is amazing! I envy those prints that use so much detail that if it was slightly less it wouldn't work in the laws of fashion, but at this amount wow! The mix of dots, paisly stripes, everything. Really awesome, is that your own minds creation or from the movie? The flowers on her outfit, the subtle red and outstanding purple highlighted by silver. The reddish over tones in his drapery nicely coincide with her very redness. The reds blend nicely with the purple/red spectrum on the right side and standout but work with the fading greens and blue. The background colour texture reminds me of those deepspace photos of dust clouds and the such. I like the white hearts, white is pure, nice symbolism. The gold is a really nice touch! Is this the first time you used a gold pen in work? It looks real ehf-aye-bee. The texture on the flowers, looks so real, like you pressed them onto the picture. Erg such solid black hair...*shakes fist*
The skin on her face looks nicely pale, her hands seem darker in colour than her face though. A little more blue/gray in palour. But she could just be wearing a face makeup thats paler than her hands.
I can't think about tanukis now without remembering the book with oodles of tanuki/geisha beastiality. Thank you Tom Robbins.
