Guess who got back into Utena after a decade of non-fandom?

Is it just me, or does anyone else out there find characters like Anthy and Ayanami Rei deeply disturbing (albeit very alluring) characters? Don't get me wrong, I love Anthy dearly, but the idea of her and Akio using the world itself as a means of exacting eternal mutual payback upon each other... *shiver*

Anthy's face is very askew; her glasses are lopsided as hell. I tried to compensate by narrowing her right eye. It goes to show how bad I am at drawing faces at 3 a.m. Still, I tried to make it work. :P

BTW, the red hand is supposed to be Akio's.

Okay, where to begin?

Hm, well firstly I really really like this. It caught my eye in the Utena feed, there's seldom an image so well thought out.

I enjoy the slightly sinister mischievousness in older Anthy's face. Whereas the younger she attached to her, desperately crying, shows that that is still a part of her inside, however well hidden. I really enjoyed the style of colouring, too. It's quite an unusual take on traditional cell shading. Nice work with the multi-media too. Not to mention the brilliantly clear but somehow offbeat style of lineart.

This image is one big Yay for me!

Woah, geez, thanks so much!

I like your interpretation of the painting. I did intend to show Anthy's inner self, but I also wanted to represent the two perceptions of her that many people (on the show and in the fandom) have of her: the Victim and the Witch.

Thanks again!

You're so welcome. I'm a dedicated fan of finely tuned shojo, so it's just a treat for my eyes and brain. I invest tons of my hard earned cash commissioning the stuff. X3

This image is spectacular. Anthy is one of my all-time favorite characters because she has so many different sides. It's easy to say that she's either "a" or "b" and the other is just a facade, but that isn't just it. There's a lot more to her than both sides... yes, there are times when she scares the crap out of me (I think the freakiest moment for me was when her eyes roll into the back of her head and she disappears in... I think it was in the second-to-last episode. Another great one was the whole Mamiya reveal). There are also times when I really, really pity her (all the flashbacks, and just... everything.)

Anthy's a menacing, messed-up woman with a broken childhood who just... I don't know. I'm rambling. This piece really made me think about her, and it was a lot of fun. This style just really belongs with the series, especially the rays of light coming from the rose (reminds me of Akio's paintings in the movie).

I love the ending because it shows that she has grown, and is growing. It's great.

tl;dr: Awesome piece, very inspiring and it made me think a lot. Yay!
