Herr God, Herr Lucifer
Beware, beware Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air. - Sylvia Plath, Lady Lazarus When I am through with you, There won't be anything left. - The VLA --- This took months to complete, but then again, the feelings that fueled me to paint it took a long for me to make sense of and turn into something constructive. Not to worry, I'm okay, I just needed to paint this into order to help make myself feel okay. I honestly don't know if this painting will get me in trouble or not if it's seen by some, but those of them who know why I painted it will hopefully understand. Your watercolors always have the most wonderful fluidity in the forms, and that works really beautifully here. I love the title, I've always been intrigued by the themes in Judith and this is a verrrry interesting extrapolation.
Obviously the ravens are great, it's such a turbulent motif and I love how that pulls the eye toward the center and the extreme contrast there with the hair and the halo and the blood and the column. I don't know what the story is behind the creation of this painting, but it stands alone as a great mysterious, tragic, narrative sort of piece. aaah that bicycle! it haunts me! The only confusing area is her arm, I think, where it's difficult to tell how solid she is and if that tray she's holding is actually coming through her arm...but it's not as if that makes or breaks the painting as a whole. It's gorgeous and haunting. Thanks a bucketload for the lovely comment!
The splotches were actually unintentional, but I was pleased with how they looked and then went along with it. Painting's fun like that; You never know what sort of path you'll take. I struggled with that cursed arm for a while before finally throwing my hands up. |
