All of my costume concept sketches for the HAJET Hokkaido Players' 2010 musical production of "Aladdin".
Geez, I've done a lot of sketches, now that I see them all at once. The anatomy's crap, but I wasn't aiming too far with correctness. The play is going to be based on the British pantomime version of the story, which takes place in China (same as the original tale in 1001 Nights). The villain and one other character are Egyptian (I hope their designs aren't offensive - Tell me if they are!), but everyone else are all Peking residents. I really hope the director likes these. I can't wait to see Jasmine running around in hanfu (Han Chinese clothes)! A lot of past productions have used Qing Dynasty costume, with the long queues of hair and qipaos and whatnot. Hanfu are much prettier, I think, and also much easier to make! Qing costume is very fitted and complex, and the HAJET Players don't have much time to use on sewing. :S The play's scheduled for May 2010, at three locations (TBA) in Hokkaido. Stay tuned for more info. You can check out past Hokkaido Players shows at [link] ! Art and designs copyright moi. "Aladdin" copyright Queen Scheherazade. |
